Sorry to be so chalky on top, but this is definitely Shancelot’s race to lose! Last time out he was caught by a neck at the wire in a 7 furlong affair, and this week he’s back to a more manageable 6 furlongs. Time before last he blew them out by over 12, and 6 before that. And this horse is a front runner, gate-to-wire specialist. So he will undoubtedly be showing the way Saturday, and will be the one to hit the wire first.
Nextie! Flagstaff is more accustomed to shorter sprints than rival Omaha Beach. Most of Flagstaff’s starts are in the 6 furlong range, and he’s more of a stalker, so he’s my top choice to pull any kind of an upset over your chalk on Saturday. Flagstaff can hang around the pace and then slip past the leaders for a vic, and it just might be a little easier for him because he’s got Victor Espinoza up again!
Lastie! Omaha Beach looks like the best of the rest in this field! He is coming off three straight wins in a row and he won all three of those starts pretty darn handily. But I just have a few questions for him. First of all, most of his starts are on average at least one mile in distance. Last time out he was in the Arkansas Derby and that was run at a mile and an eighth. And at least in his last three starts he was pretty much a front runner, so my question is this: Is Omaha Beach more suited for sprints because he is a front runner? Will Mike Smith’s timing work out just right? And how about the layoff? He hasn’t run a race since the Ark Derb; he might need this race to get back in the swing of things.
