Ruidoso Downs will not offer Thoroughbred racing at its upcoming race meet, leaving New Mexico without an operating Thoroughbred track during the summer.
After several flash floods damaged the New Mexico track following June wildfires, Ruidoso Downs will transfer the remainder of its meet, which runs until Sept. 2, to The Downs at Albuquerque.
Ruidoso Downs canceled races 8-12 July 20 after flooding poured into the infield, racetrack, and backstretch areas.
The New Mexico Racing Commission held an emergency meeting July 2 in the wake of flooding that caused damage to Ruidoso Downs. Among plans discussed was moving Ruidoso's Thoroughbred racing to Albuquerque.
Due to continued flash flooding from the burn-scarred areas in the Ruidoso area, Ruidoso Downs has canceled Quarter Horse racing July 1, meant to be a make-up day for the Rainbow Derby trials that were canceled June 30.
