Canterbury Park racing officials have cancelled their Aug. 23 eight-race program due to forecasted heat indexes that could make racing dangerous to both horses and the people that work outdoors.
Canterbury Park will move the its first post time Aug. 23 to 6:30 p.m. CT from 5 p.m. The Thursday, Aug. 24, program will start at 5 p.m.
Purse increases for the Wally's Choice Stakes and Glitter Star Stakes, both to be run Saturday, Aug. 12, were announced today by the Canterbury Park racing office. Both stakes will now offer $65,000 purses, an increase of $15,000 each.
With high heat indexes expected Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, Canterbury Park racing officials, after consulting with the Minnesota Racing Commission and the Minnesota HBPA, proactively changed post time each night to 7:00 p.m.
Canterbury Park Hall of Fame's inductees were announced July 11. The Class of 2023 includes thoroughbred owner/breeder Bob Lothenbach of Wayzata, former jockey Ry Eikleberry, and retired Minnesota-bred Thoroughbred Mr. Jagermeister.
Canterbury Park's Northern Stars Turf Festival attracted jockeys and trainers from around the country. Locally based horses won two of those stakes with Cupids Crush in the Curtis Sampson Oaks and Golden Bandit winning the Canterbury Derby.
Entries were taken June 14 for the Northern Stars Turf Festival, Canterbury Park’s most prominent night of racing, which will be conducted on Wednesday, June 21.
Twenty-six races, 10 on the turf course, are scheduled to be run during the first three programs at Canterbury Park, which opens May 27.
